Question £350 to spend on a giggable combo?

not me, someone I know. In a somewhat convoluted work incentive system he is coming into £350 but this has to be something his employers can purchase and not just the cash. So, basically something new or second hand only through a dealer.

Loud enough to gig/ compete with a drum kit.

Portability is important ( despite having said a combo I guess head plus cab would be fine).

    Primarily for clean tones.

    Not bothered about any effects.

Used to playing SS amps but quite fancies a valve amp.

    Not a digital/modelling amp.

    Any thoughts?

I haven't actually gigged it yet ... but am in regular rehearsals in a 5-piece ... using a Peavey Valveking 112.
    50watts
    2 channels
    fx loop
lots of clean on the class A setting
turns a little crunchier on the class A/B setting
they are just a little over budget new

May be selling some gear - some but not all - Yamaha SG400 / Overwater Custom / Agile AL3100 Custom

I always forget Peavey yet they have made some great amps - seem to have a better understanding over there in Mississippi of what works in a pub than they do in Bletchley.

Not sure about that - have you ever tried to get a sound out of a solid state Bandit?

If the price is right either a Laney VC30 or Peavey Classic 30, not sure if you can get one new for £350 anymore but you'd definitely get a used one in good condition for that sort of money.

At that price a used Hot Rod Deluxe ticks a lot of boxes and can be resold later with little loss.

Oh yes. Where we rehearse has a hotch potch of amps but I usually end up using a Bandit. Lots of knobs that make very, very little difference to the sound but it takes pedals much better than some SS amps and digital amps so as long as you treat it as a way of making you louder and get your tone from somewhere else I think they are okay.

Classic 30 - fairly sure they don't have much clean headroom ? although never used one just what I'd read.

Laney VC30 - that could be an obvious choice

Hot Rod Deluxe - suprised you can get a decent one for £350, although never really looked. But if you can that probably ticks most of his boxes.

If you can - try and find a second hand ZT Club. Great option for portability, primarily clean amp. Plenty of headroom.
