Ah..I appear to have confused it with an altogether, erm, different kind of a film, entitled "Celebrating Dave"....

So...finally got to see the Led Zep O2 gig!

    Firstly the negatives:

Jimmy Page ...Seriously bad tone for the most part and some seriously ropey lead playing too.
Honestly, he was shocking in parts. Since I've Been Loving You was surprisingly together, and a few other highlights, but really I don't know how he managed to bring himself to release this as a film when his own contribution was so iffy!
On the other hand, great gurning action from the man! Superb rock shapes too.

Sound mix. Might have been down to the cinema's over-reliance on surround sound bass bins and all that bobbins, but quite boomy. Probably fine on the DVD though.

Not the greatest start. It took the band a few songs to get into their stride - Good Times Bad Times and Ramble On were somewhat lacklustre.

    Positives

Jason Bonham did as good as job as anyone could have done, really stepped up to the plate. Kudos. Even if he is a bit of a tit.

John Paul John. Making it all look as effortless as he ever did.

But the real revelation, and what surprised me the most was Plant's vocal performance. Leaving aside the first few tunes which, as I say, weren't as confident as you'd hope...Wowzer, he really pulled it out of the bag for this show.
I have to admit I was expecting Plant to be the weak link in the chain, the years not to have been kind to his throat...but I have to say he made it the gig it was.

Despite my reservations re Page's playing, it was still a massively enjoyable romp. Standout tunes were Nobody's Fault But Mine and mabe even Misty Mountain Hop, a song I would normally give a wide berth to!

Looking forward to seeing it again on DVD to see if my opinions change but really it has to be full marks to Plant, Jones and Bonham and a raised eyebrow and a "well you got away with that this time but don't let me see you in my office again, Mr Page, as next time I won't be so forgiving"...for Jimmy.

Page even cropped up on Later...Live last night to plug it.

I'm very much looking forward to seeing it.

The crazy thing is Jimmy was never that good. Unless you like playing which verges on the careless, duff and duffed notes with occasional questionable tone. And yet... I remember hearing LZ II for the first time and scrambling to buy it. Then listening to LZ1 and thinking, "Patchy but brilliant." Where he excelled was the rawness, the riffs, the sonic innovation - and I'm still there, it's what I want in my playing, even if no-one can get away with being that OTT any more.

Saw Mr Plant most recently at the Corn Exchange, Cambridge, think it was 2004. Evening kicked off with Arthur Brown, who was excellent (very amusing/ironic that the crown of flames is now a tonsure), but when Plant came on with his band he stepped the whole concert up several gears. Still the best rock singer for me.

I like the imperfection of page, shows he's still a normal guy with some chops! I'd heard stories of his coming in busting out a track an fuckin off again! Inlike that and you can certainly hear some little fluff ups in all the albums pretty much.

For questionable tone, I agree - look up the isolated tracks of his guitar playing, I think some are still on there (confirmed LZ recording track) and out of the mix it kinda sounds a little shitty.
