    Default Phase inverter query

My Deluxe Reverb II asks for a 7025 phase inverter, but I have bunged a 12at7 in there and I prefer the sound. Am I in danger of ruining anything? I assume not (because 12at7s can take more current than 7025/12ax7 can't they?) but whenever I assume anything I'm usually wrong. Please reassure me...

It's absolutely fine. Most Blackface, Silverface and Rivera-series Fender amps including the Deluxe Reverb and the almost identical but higher-powered Concert use a 12AT7, with the same circuit values. I really don't know why they specified the 7025 for the DRII. I agree that a 12AT7 sounds better.

It's not *always* the case that you can safely substitute a 12AT7 for a 12AX7 though - the current rating is only part of the full spec, and in some rare cases the wrong valve can even damage the *amp* rather than the valve, so it's really not a good idea to just do this without checking first! Thanks ICBM. You seem to have answered every single one of my amp queries. Cheers.
