At this point can we do the old AC/DC and gain argument?

No need. I've already used Wishbone Ash as a f'rinstance

Good compromise is to have amp-tweakers (owners) on hand as you walk on stage - got pedals y/n, do you want clean, edge of break-up, or gritty - to set it all up for you (and show where the MV is )

It's total madness, this. The amp is as much a part of the instrument as the guitar, if I couldn't set the amp to how I personally was happy I wouldn't want to play at all. Would you expect to turn up with a LP and be told you can't use it as you need to play this BC Rich that's been tweaked to sound good in their mix? Is there a sound guy making sure you don't switch to the neck pickup in case it ruins their careful EQ?

On Saturday we're going to be playing a place we played before. Last time we played there were told we have to use their cabs as they've screwed the mic clips straight onto them. We did what we were asked and my guitar was totally scooped fizz and rumble. This time I'm gonna bring my ac30 and open back 2x12 combo, because that's what I want to sound like. If they refuse to mic it, am I the bad guy for not compromising?

I sympathise with those who complain about the attitude of crews ... but my main point was about why so many people think that maxing the fizz gives you a 'good' sound and how you can often get a better sound by having the amp on the edge of breakup so you can clean up with the volpot and let it respond to the dynamics in your playing.

It's remarkable how many people don't know that. I know a guitarist whose musical ear kicks the shit out of mine, but he has no idea what dynamics different pickups give you and he's never really played in bands so he has no idea about what cuts and what doesn't.
I'm back and better than ever.

I find that using the "rhythm" position on a Lester gives you mud for a rhythm part, so I use the back pickup with the volume rolled off for backing singers and other soloists, and the front pickup when I take a solo.
