Pah - that's just the correct way of playing it. I thought you had an easier way of doing it. I know how to play it - I just can't. You fucking stupid or what?

Good thread, I hate Mr Brightside too, but mainly because I hate The Killers.

sorry to come in late on this but I've just had to learn this for my band and it's a bu99er.

I've used Sticky's concept but gone one further.

Play it in standard tuning. Tune your high E a half step down (D#) for that drone string and tune your low E down to D. Before this, I was putting too much pressure on the strings when going for that last stretch and it was putting them out of tune or I was damping strings (it's a bit cramped high up the neck on a Strat).

I hope this helps although some people may have got this already.

    Damn clever playing!

Mr Keuning plays it tuned down half a step, fingers thusly: X-17-16-19-17-0

First finger on D string, second finger on A string, third finger on B string and pinky on G string. Then for the 15th Fret G/F# (bass note of 3rd time around, depending on the key) swap to use your first finger for the E string and second finger on the D string

In my band we play it in standard tuning, with the top E tuned to D, and fingered: X-15-14-17-15-0

which has the effect of being a semitone lower than the original

AM I being dumb here but was the difficulty caused by trying to do that open note as a fingered note due to using a different tuning? Cos I just tried that and it seems pretty easy.

No, not dumb. Just insufferably smug.

Pleased for you but it's not that. The difficulty for me lay in the contortion or stretch of the last chord in the progression. The index finger note was causing me an issue.

Works a treat now that I've altered the tuning to suit me and thought I'd share it.

I've found that shortening the guitar strap a bit for this song lessens the anxiety somewhat and makes the whole song slightly less tiring on the wrist..

Viz Top Tip:If you choose to cop out and do the 'downtuned E', you could then do Yellow by Coldplay.

B string tuned to A, G tuned to G# and capo on 2nd fret for me.

It lets the fingers form a more natural chord shape if that makes sense. The capo takes care of the the low F# in the bridge so no stretches or cramped chord shapes anywhere!

I'm not understanding the stretch thing either. I think it's played in D but they tune down a semi so it sounds like C#

The way I play it there's no stretch as it's all up in the 15th fret range, it's cramped rather than stretched ... maybe that's what people mean
