My understanding is that these were known as 'American Standard' Strats. The 'Dan Smith' tag is usually reserved in vintage guitar-speak for the earlier '82 guitars, with original trems, jack-plates and three controls, which are quite collectible.

Indeed. The strats with the freeflite trem are the post Dan Smith ones.

your correct, they called some of them the Elite, and some of them were just std's, and I am sure this one is a std, as the elite's had other things like pickup change, or gold hardware, I have been check guitars from 1977 to 1983 the past week, check this out, also great info for possible purchaser

The Elites had active circuitry and a different pick-up design. Guitars from this period (IIRC) were the very last to be built in the Fullerton factory, but are far from desirable. They were designed (the Standard in particular) to cut production costs - the body only needed to be routed from the front, jack moved on to the scratch-plate saving both machining and hardware, etc.

The 'new' American Standards from the Corona plant (from about '86/'87) were MUCH better.
