I tried and gave up with thumbpicks as well. Now I keep my picking hand fingernails just long enough to get a brighter tone than bare flesh. Same with my thumbnail. Long nails are unwieldy, give a thin, crap tone and are a nightmare to keep undamaged. Mostly though I use a flatpick and fingers hybrid style.
