Default Electro Voice EVM12L vs Eminence Pro Delta 12A

    Hi all,

I've two Orange 2x12, both with the stock Vintage 30s - I love the sound of them both with my Orange heads as their 'spike' and upper mid cut is a nice contrast to the dark tone of the amps. However, I'm thinking of mixing things up with one of the cabs by putting in a different pair of speakers. I thought I'd like to try some very efficient, high powered speakers as I already have the V30s and another 4x12 with original 25w GBs. I've heard great things about both of the aforementioned speakers, but have read that the Eminence is more or less a slightly darker and more powerful interpretation of the EV. If this is the case, I'd probably want to avoid it and head for the EVs for their extra brightness, but is it worth paying the huge amount of extra cash on top? If anyone has had any experience with these speakers, and especially with Orange amps, please chip in!

    Thanks very much,

    Jack

EVs are fairly readily available used, so pick one up and have a go. it's low risk, they're popular so you can sell it on if it's not for you.

I haven't tried the Eminence but have used the EV's and V30's. The Ev's aren't really more efficient than the V30's. They both have a 100dB sensitivity rating. The EV's will obviously handle way more power and will have the ability to stay clean. It's very difficult to distort an EV.

The EV's are a very "stiff" or unforgiving speaker. If you are playing a high gain sound this won't be an issue. If you are playing clean or medium gain the feel will be pretty different. Not all amp's work well with EV's. The top end can be pretty spikey with the EV in certain amps.

The other thing to consider is that two EV's will add about 20lbs to to a 212 cab. A 212 cab with EV's is going to be quite heavy. It may be just the thing for you if you are willing to deal with the weight. If you can possibly borrow or play through a cab with EV's or the Eminence it could save you some time and money if you don't like the result.
