It is a thing I keep intending to try. Jimmie Vaughan uses flatwounds and he can get a good clean strat tone. I seem to recall when Jeff Beck did his rockabilly album he struggled to get the right tone despite using all sorts of expensive guitars and amps and it only came together when he made the move to flatwounds.

I play with this guy every so often Called Phil, we have a bit of a laugh about the Shadows as he knows i hate them.
But he just nails the tone, and has ended up playing with Bruce Welch and the Midnight Shadows. He has always said its the heavy strings with a really heavy pick that is the essence of the Hank Tone.
He can get the sound out of most guitars and amps, but take a look for yourself.
By the way this guy can bend any string, no matter what the gauge, and thinks SRV was a wimp for using light strings

Phil Kelly is a great Shads player, saw him at my local Shadows club when he got up and did a few. He also played some great Gary Moore songs that night too. I was at Shadowmania this year and understand Phil didn't play with Bruce for health reasons, cos he normally does that. Hope he's on the mend now

I will pass on your regards to Phil. as for doing the Gary Moore stuff, We were playing down in Bridport one night when he broke his 2nd string, not having a spare he used a plain 20, still bent it all over the place. I was on Bass that night and tried his guitar, I could not play a thing on it.

Hank Marvin once said in an interview ,I'm sure of it , that he used a Burns Guitar and a homemade tape Slap Back unit to record Apache , I'm almost certain I have a copy of it on VHS somewhere. A Marshal echoHead ( I've got one....but I'm car booting it soon) will give you a very similar effect.

This sounds crazy, but you can play Apache on an acoustic, I do, and it sounds strangely quite good, I play quite a few Shads stuff on an acoustic as it happens, some work very well, others not so good. I also play an acoustic version of the Ventures 'Walk Don't Run' and that works quite well also believe it or not.
I doubt, therefore I might be!
