I've always used guitar amps for practice at home, I've never at any stage used my bass rigs for practice and I've never once had any issues with speakers distorting. Aslong as the volumes kept low. In fact I find the feel quite punchy which is cool for the funkier side of things!

Gallien K mb150s for me,doesn't take up much space also has h'phone socket, sometimes use a 1x12 spare ext cab for bigger gigs, never run out of volume even when I depped with a 5 piece blues band, also handles low b well, mike b

No good for gigging, but I have a Roland bass micro cube and it is great for practice and takes little space.
