Black metal has come along a fair old way since then!

I'm not massively into it myself (far prefer death metal), but I absolutely love some of it. Here's some of my favourite stuff.

The first one is more typical of the early/mid-90s Norwegian scene, Emperor are my favourite band from that lot (despite the stabby homophobe behind the kit)...

Blut Aus Nord are French and while their stuff broadly falls under black metal as a whole, they don't really care for the scene... I think "childish Satanic clowns" is the phrase they used for the majority of black metal bands.

Abigail Williams are a more modern band from America. I'm not hugely familiar with their stuff, but I heard this track, which came out earlier this year, and was blown away by it.

The best bands are the ones who don't bother with theatrics as much, and just get on with making music. Most of the modern bands don't do any of the make-up or anything like that any more.

I love the drum sound! Particularly around 4:40, just sounds absolutely huge.

I always find it hilarious how awful black/death metal bands sound live. Given the genre we play we gig with them reasonably often and it's always the same. 2 skinny guys with long hair moving their fingers frantically while all you hear is a mushy constant drone. Blast beats are also retarded.
