I'd like someone to develop an electric machine that sharpens plane blades and chisels.
I currently spend about 1/3 of my waking life sharpening- at least that is what it feels like.

there is one, its called a sharpening wheel........I have an attachment that fits on a power drill......and a 'clamp' like thing that makes sure the blade is presented at the correct angle

This is partly due to modern tools using mild steel for cutting edges! At least it seems so to me. I bought a 10mm chisel from Wickes a few months ago, wasn't super cheap, wasn't super sharp either! I found it hard to get a decent edge on it and what I did get did not last.

But then you should go "little and often". I recall master cabinet maker Dad always had a stone nearby and a can of Neatsfoot oil. When working with materials such as Rosewood the chisel got "stroked" every few minutes.

If you want something that REALLY forks your cutting edges try Pitch Pine. Old school desks were often made of it. Burns like a a b'stard as well!

I believe you can get WCarbide edged plane irons? I doubt you could re sharpen them yourself though.

    Dave.

    I could do this now.

Just built a new PC and the ASUS motherboard has a handy smartphone/tablet app that lets you control the computer in a variety of ways, including as a touchpad/keyboard/mouse.

In theory I could fire up a modeler or DAW and control it with my phone while I play guitar across the room.

At the moment I am working mostly with ash.
It is rougher than Dot Cotton's vag.

I have some nice tools- Kirchen chisels and Lie Nielsen and Veritas planes- just seems I am always sharpening them.

Bertie- not sure I would trust myself with a sharpening wheel- I was more thinking something like a Plek machine- a computermabob where you set the angle of the bevel you want and the machine does it without any human interaction.
I might invent one- using either lasers or monkeys (or BOTH!)

Yeah, you could install a few guitar leads under the carpet with different colours on the plugs [red for couch, blue for standing at the door.......]

Aren't you supposed to keep them under a pyramid to keep 'em sharp?
