So it's all right for an amp repairman to publicly call John Coopers design " A heap of crap" just because some jump single core wires have to be cut or desoldered from the valve holders to get the PCB out, but I'm getting grieve cos I accidentally thought the guy was inexperienced at working on complicated equipment. Some things are a pain to work on but that doesn't make them a heap of crap does it ...... or maybe in this weird world of valve amp doctors it does

Thanks to the other guys for chipping in about prices, I think I will pop it on for £300 and see what happens

Perhaps you should find out more about John Chambers before you dismissively refer to him as "an amp repairman".

The point about this amp design is that it's unnecessarily poor - there is no need for nonsense like having to unsolder valve sockets to work on a PCB. As I said before, look inside a Mesa if you want to see how to do it - they're far more complicated, much better made *and* easier to service. In particular, because they use high-quality through-plated PCBs, in most cases you don't even need to take the board out to change minor components - and if you do, it's possible (as it should always be) to do it without unsoldering anything, even if you do have to dismantle a fair amount of stuff. They're also built better so they're more reliable in the first place.

    Good luck with the sale.

I do not endorse calling the amp a "heap of crap", and even if I did, it would not be due to the fact the amp is "hard" to work on, or not as the case may be.

In my view the serviceability is a lifetime cost issue for the owner of the amp, so I don't think that it is unreasonable to point out that an amp is "harder" to work on than other makes, as this means that any repair bills are likely to be larger than other amps.

It's hardly surprising that those people who repair gear for a living (your term "weird world of valve amp doctors" could be deemed pejorative by the way) tend to look at gear from a serviceability stand point; something that often isn't considered during the design stage.

Furthermore, the designer is rarely solely responsible for the designing - the bean counters frequently interfere - so any criticism of the construction details may not be a direct reflection on the competence of the designer.

I had the head version of that combo. I also had the massive 4x12 to go with it.

the Amp was nice but it went back to the factory many times for repairs. The cab was amazing. One of the best I've ever used.

I got £99.00 for the head when I ebayed it about 5 years ago.
