That's not bad at all - do you have your home policy with them too & get a special rate because of that?
I'm in rented accommodation & its contents aren't covered - I desperately need to take out a policy.

I don't have any other policy with them. I'm in rented accommodation too, so it's ideal. It's worth popping onto their website to get a quote. You can pay about £5 extra a month to include public liability and personal accident insurance too, but I didn't bother.

There was a thread about public liability insurance on here recently. If you're gigging and say a PA speaker falls off a stand and lands on someone's head you'd be liable, or if some numpty trips over any cables you've laid down, or kills himself by shoving his hand in back of you amp. Worth thinking about and deciding if the risk's worth it.

Insurers say they "share information". So if you're gigging, and you insure your gear for it, but you don't tell your car insurers, you should expect a snotty letter from the latter if you have a prang on the way to/from a gig. They're unlikely to believe that you've just been round to a mate's for an amateur jam.

Yeah, I saw that. I do take it on board, but I don't own a PA, and the gigs I've played have very rarely required me to make dangerous use of my gear. It'd be worthwhile if I was gigging weekly or bi-weekly, but I'm not. I just wanted cover in case one of my guitars fell off a stand or some pisshead tries to eat my pedalboard or something.

Won't be insured out of the house, won't be covered if you earn money with it and often the definitions of a single item limit allow them to join together completely separate items. So they will view guitar and amp as a single item (needing both to function) which then makes sure the loss of both of them can be caught by a single value limit of about £1500.

Simple fact is - house insurance is designed for standard house things and not GAS obsessives.

A great deal of house policies only cover, for example, £300 worth of CDs and DVDs.

Anyway - I use Allianz for my kit. Mainly because I also use their litigation insurance policies and have always found them to be entirely professional and will pay out when needed.

There was a few court cases over that approach with computer systems. They would argue that the entire thing, including screen, processor, printer, scanner, modem etc were all a single item. And of course when all this kicked off a mid range PC would cost you £1500 without breaking sweat.

PC kit is pretty cheap these days, but if you have a crappy policy and own a Les Paul and a Dual Rec and you're fucked.
