Also in the UK theres a cultural hatred of technical guitar playing anyway, you wouldnt see a Cellist or Pianist with ability so disregarded.
In fairness you rarely see Cellists or Pianists making youtube videos where they hammer up and down scales as fast as they possibly can.

Who give a toss if someone else doesn't like them! I like at least one guitar with one, but I wouldn't have one on my main guitar

I play pretty much exclusively metal and I don't really get on with them. I find you have to pay too much attention to how hard you palm mute to avoid detuning and unison bends are just an arse. Plus additonal string breakage.

i dunno about the youtube thing, but certainly most classical music has a pretty heavy "virtuoso" content. I hate the way a certain type of guitar player acts like only guitar players are guilty of the "show-off" gene. Most musicians are. And classical composers were perfectly happy to write for those virtuosos. Shred isn't something new.

What is an "OEM ping floyd"?

Show off yes, but I think electric guitar is the instrument in which non musical technique for techniques sake wanking is most prevalent.

I dunno. listen to some paganinni or something like that and it's pretty technique-for-the-sake-of-technique stuff. most concertos-for-specific-instruments are, too.

plus i mean it's fairly subjective whether something is musical or not. i agree that just playing fast for the sake of it and paying no attention to sounding "musical" sounds horrible- but plenty of the players who I see that accusation levelled at, to me, are pretty musical, too. I mean... look at malmsteen. he's frequently criticised for just wanking. but his vibrato is killer. better than a lot of the players who are considered to be "feel" players. if you ask me, vibrato is tied in pretty closely with feeling.

I agree with you on Paganini. Just bought a CD of his stuff the other day and a lot is very similar to guitar widdling.

It's a licensed (or non-licensed) Floyd that's badly made and the strings go 'ping' when you use it. Most are cheap alloy and wear out very quickly.

I like the Edge Pro one on my JS1000...it's a bit lower profile than the standard Edge or a Floyd and that really works for me, in terms of hand position. Unison bends are a bit more tricky...you need to bend both strings to keep the pitch right but I find I do this pretty naturally after a while. And you kind of need to do the same thing with any trem...just not as much.

As far as re-tuning goes...it does take me longer to re-tune and re-string the JS than my non-Floyd guitar. But not by a massive amount. And I would never gig with just the JS. Just in case.

I went to see The Darkness once and Justin broke a string on his Ibby in the middle of a solo. It made a fantastically discordant twaaAAAAaaaangggg and he had to run offstage and grab another guitar. That said, the gig we played last weekend, the other guitarist broke a string on his strat and it had a similar effect. He had no backup, so he grabbed my JS and promptly tried to tune it by turning the tuning pegs at the headstock. All manner of confusion ensued.
