Blimey! When I started this thread I didn't realise how much interest it would generate. Ironically enough, my job is Programming and Setting CNC Machines to produce small batches of precision steel components. I know this cannot compare to woodworking and guitar making, but the CNC Machines can produce work to fine tolerances and only does what the Programmer tells it to.

With hand made or custom made guitars you are paying for a skilled luthier. Now some tasks might not benefit from that skill and experience but the man needs to be paid none the less. Metal or electrical parts are bought in and again if they are unique then the setup and low production run costs reflect in the eventual instrument whereas using a 'tele' bridge gives the maker several options in quality and price.
In a factory the skill is with the production planning and the toolmaker. Once the machine is set to run the relatively unskilled operative can crank out components, jig assembly is fairly safe and an experienced person can do the final assembly, stringing and basic setup. Churning them out by the dozen recoups the capital machine costs and eventually results in profits. Or at least that is the theory.

Yep, Programmers don't always make the right commands and like Sporky says above, things like that have happened in our Machine Shop *Whistles*.

Right click on the image and then select 'copy image location'. Then in the post, click on the "insert image" box, paste in the URL you've just copied and it should work. Best tried in 'Go Advanced' mode where you get a preview to check it's worked. Some websites do prevent direct linking and won't show the picture.
