Essential aural/listening skills for the modern drummer
What do you think are the most important listening skills for drummers and percussionists?
I'm just getting started with drumming myself and from other instruments I know the importance of making sure your ears keep up with your fingers! So I wanted to ask the more experienced players here: what do you do to develop your ears as a drummer?
I'm guessing that being able to recognise the different percussion sounds is vital, and working out drum parts by ear would be a great ability to have (rather than relying on notation). What else? (or any tips for practising these?)
