    Default Strat tone question

Righto. My strat is lovely. It feels nice, plays well and does the Mayer-blues thing really well. But it's quite polite. I keep watching videos of other strat guys- mostly Springsteen's chaps- and they're getting sounds my own strat can only dream of. How do I get near this? Is it a pedal thing?

Look carefully at Nils Lofgren and Steve van Zandt's Strats - especially at the jack plates - and then Google "Alembic Stratoblaster".

It's actually a pretty basic single-transistor booster, so you should be able to get similar results with something like an EH LPB-1, if you don't want to mod the guitar.

Looks simple enough. Might build a clone in a pedal rather than limiting it to just the one guitar.

I always assumed they got the tone from Boss pedals?
