Default made a minor dick of myself acoustically

or would that be made a major dick of myself.

ok some background. I've dabbled, lots off and some on, with guitars for too many years but been too chicken to play in front of people until recently.

My live experience is pretty much limited to a couple of acoustic strumming things backing singers at a mike night (going direct into the PA)

this time I decided to play Angie (Anji) a la Bert Jansch which I can play fine.

Again I had an acoustic guitar (soundhole pickup) plugged direct into the PA (at an open mike night) and kinda fell to pieces principally because I couldn't hear what I was playing. Not helped by the fact that it isn't the easiest thing to play. Bugger.

Question (there had to be one!)....

i'm thinking of the best fix so I can get this monkey off my back. Would it be best if I plugged into an amp so I get to hear properly what I'm playing. If so can anyone recommend budget amps for this purpose and what sort of size (ie would 20W be sufficient)? I have an old graphic eq which I can use to boost the signal from the soundhole pickup if needs be as well.

otherwise do we have a better idea as I made a bit of a dick of myself and need to rectify!!

    ta

    Well done ! Cherry popped.

Not hearing yourself is tough, often it's nowhere as bad as you think it is.

    AER60 is superb, if pricey.

Fishman also great and half the price of AER

Marshall/Fender Acoustic half the price of the Fishman, adeqaute (not great).

Open mic monitoring is an issue especially to pepes who only play electric and are used to listening to their amps not the PA. Setting up your own amp to play through may be an option depending on the night and the organiser etc. however really listening is the key. You can also adjust your position on stage ie move forward so you can hear the FOH or even get them to turn one round so its pointing towards you.( This is what I do on the one I run). If your sitting down slightly tip the guitar so its projecting up towards you or replace it with one of these http://www.bouldercreekguitars.com/sol_r3n.html !

Worth also looking at the Tanglewood acoustic amp - it's had some great reviews, seems to approach the quality of the AER but half the price.

The Roland acoustic amps probably give the best bang for buck though, imho.

A thought .... just got me technical head on ... what if one used a splitter box to send a signal not only the PA but to one of those little headphone amps ... and onwards to a single earpiece. Earpiece monitoring ...

Don't laugh, but the little Meridian amps are actually OK if you want it more for personal monitoring than your main projected sound - and it's half the price even of the Tanglewood.

I would have recommended AER too, until I had one of their monitor-style amps to repair recently. I was shocked how poorly made it was inside - although it's the first I've actually had to work on, which probably says they're not actually unreliable.

Any time playing in front of people you'll lose 10-90% of your playing ability compared to playing in a bedroom.

So when Jalapeno says Cherry Popped he knows what he's talking about - we've all been there.

The way to get the percentage down is to go out and do it again and again, it's all nerves.

Dunno about the amp stuff just the mind stuff
