Default Any thoughts on Yamaha NTX700 etc?

    GAS strikes again!!

I've always loved the sound of a nylon stringed guitar and want to delve deeper in Bossa Nova, Latin/Jazz and have come across this mid priced 'hybrid' classical guitar. Has anyone got any experience with the Yamaha NTX700 or Hybrid classicals in general?

Is it worth paying more for the solid back and sides that are on the NTX900?

I'm not a classical player at all, so I find the fact it's similar to a steel string acoustic quite interesting, and I guess a trade off is that with a slimmer body, some tone and volume will be sacrificed. I'm not after something from a purists perspective (yet! ) as it's mostly for round the house and the odd acoustic duo/gig.

So yeah, any thoughts would be cool, as are any alternatives

I've not played one, but I'm interested in getting one too. I love the feel and tone of nylon strings, but a full-on classical guitar would be a bit limiting for me (and the fretboard too wide) - the Yamaha's look like a good compromise.

I'd save up for the 1200 though, nothing beats an ebony fingerboard and rosewood back and sides! I had a CPX 700 a few years back - it was good, but not a keeper, I regretted not getting the better model and ended up selling it.

Worth looking at a used Yamaha APX-N, think their discontinued. I had a couple- a laminated one was a newer spruce top, laminated back and sides that had an amazing neck profile, B-Band electronics, the other was older all solid cedar, rosewood, didn't like the neck as much (I think the retrofitted nut was cut wrong, which didnt help.).The pickup was stereo which several ways pan the strings across the stereo spectrum. It was quite old and the body sounded dead, the older technology of the pickups didn't have such a nice basic sound IMO. Both I would say felt more like jazz/latin type guitars more than full on classical. Anyway both were bought used for ,s by the about £180 ish tho a practice amp was included with the laminated one. Sorry I cant remember the exact model nos. I found that I preferred the full on classical neck, but the Yamahas were a nice hybrid

Yeah, I guess thats what I'm unsure about. If I got the NTX700 I could (probably would!) start wishing I'd saved up for the better model. I wonder if the NTX900 is a good compromise between affordability and quality? Hmmmm

Hmmm I've just seen the NTX700 going second hand for £300. That could be too good an offer to turn down?
