Question Sticky neck - silicon impregnated cloth - stupid questions

In the telecaster(s) review in the new Guitarist it says '...lacquer finish does drag, but we found a silicon impregnated cloth helped.'

The neck of my Pawn Shop + my sweat = glue.

Would this cloth method help? ( I don't want to do anything invasive like sanding the lacquer, least not at the moment)

Where/what is silicon impregnated cloth? Felling this might just be a fancy duster but being useless at DIY and household management its a bit lost on me.

Rubbing your sticky neck with an impregnated cloth is an abomination before god .... flagellate yourself with a frayed guitar strap, say three Hail Mary's and go to bed with no supper!

Was it wrong to have enjoyed the flagellation?

Silicon is the semiconducting crystalline element, silicones are chemical compounds based on silicon (analogous to organic carbon-based molecules) frequently used in polishes, bathroom sealants and breast implants (I believe some French brands are indeed filled with bathroom sealant).

Anyway, silicones are supposed to be bad news for nitro finishes, Dan Erlewine warns not to let them near lacquer finishes. They're also present in synthetic rubber pads found on many guitar stands and in some straps, both of which are notorious for damaging lacquer finishes by mere contact. I can't imagine why Guitarist advocates applying a silicone-impregnated cloth to a lacquered neck. No good can come of it!

yeah, i have always been of the keep silicon away from guitars at all cost frame of mind

but lots of polishes do contain silicon and it does give a great feeling finish on modern auto lacquers.

but if you get silicon in raw wood you will never get it to take a finish again. from a refinish point of view its a sin, but if you are not refinishing and know you never will then you can get away with it

there are many safer ways to make a neck non-sticky

I use Guitar polish (Keyser) and a J-cloth to clean my guitar necks. It works well for me. I clean the necks when I change strings.

    Cheers.

Looked at the Guitarist thing again and I have quoted them correctly. Googling the silicon impregnated cloth I arrived at its use for cleaning strings rather than necks and for cleaning guns ( there is a gun shop near my office so I was getting quite excited about an excuse to go in there).

Won't do that then,I'll look for the Kyser or Gibson polish.

You may have, but they're still wrong!

Silicon is a hard, semi-metallic element. Silicone is an organic compound.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silicon

First line - "Not to be confused with the silicon-containing synthetic polymer silicone"

    Yeah, I know it's Wiki, but they're right .

They're also wrong about using silicone on a nitro finish, it will leave it feeling permanently "greasy"... not in a good way.

However, if the cloth was truly impregnated with silicon, it might help since it would be an abrasive .

Remember if its in a magazine it doesn't necessarily make it true.
