Talking Best beginner kit for kids?

Hey all, usually hang around in guitars but my son has decided he wants to be a drummer - has wanted this for a while now, so the Mrs and I are considering getting him a starter kit for Christmas.

Would you guys have any specific recommendations for young kids under 10 - more along the real kit than the toy route if you know what I mean as he is pretty serious and quite musical too

    Thanks for any advice.

Are you taking electronic (as this is the electronic kit section) or traditional? If electronic, I know two people who have bought the Roland HD-1 set "for their kids" and are very pleased with it. Compact yet rugged and decent sounds. Mesh snare head, so a lot better feel and less wrist strain than the solid pads on some other low-end kits.

Just under £400 new (though you may need a 'throne' and sticks as well + headphones), or obviously a lot cheaper and probably coming with accessories off eBay/Gumtree etc.

    Roland or Yamaha electronic kit.

Don't get any of that Ion shite.

If you want a proper kit then go Yamaha.

Sorry to dig up an old thread, but is the Alesis one that Costco now have for £156 any good? (As in "not total crap" .) Not sure of the model number, it might be a DM6.

I'm not expecting "pro" quality - especially as it says Pro on the box I think! - just something for my kids. We did have a real drum kit a couple of years back, a little First Act - but it was too loud for them to have much fun on in the house without feeling intimidated by the volume (really - it was them, not me!) and it took up a bit too much space.

I have looked on the Costco website but cant find any electric drums at all. Are you able to post a link for me?
A good drummer friend of ours recommended the DM6 as a great beginner set and says it is the one he recommends for his students - however I think it was the DM6 and NOT the DM6 Pro - but it would be good for me to have a look and see the difference if there is any. . . .

For some reason it's not on the website. There was one in the store while I was shopping for the usual essential supplies yesterday, but I was in a bit of a hurry and didn't write down the details (doh). It was definitely £156 (inc VAT) and I *think* it said "Pro" on the label, but I can't be sure - or that Costco are right if it did. I checked online and the closest description seems to be the DM6. I was just very surprised to see anything by Alesis in Costco to be honest! And by the price, I didn't know they did anything that cheap.

I've also found some very good reviews of it, so if I can sneak it past my wife I might get one anyway .

The DM6 is loads better than the ION shite, but still not a patch on anything Yam or Roland.

Yeah the DM6 is obviously aimed at a starter kit level, but it has been recommended to me by a friend I trust implicitly, I would get it in a second at that price.

Which Costco have you seen it in? Please say Milton Keynes
