Default simple amp - 'open' sound. recomendations

    Hi folks,
I'm thinking of buying another amp. Looking for something simple (single channel, no reverb, no fx loops needed) and *relatively* light, in the 15-30W bracket I should think, though more is not a problem but i'd like to keep the size and weight down as far as possible.

I have a tiny terror, and while it fits the bill in many ways, I'm looking for something a bit more 'open' sounding. Sorry for the poor and subjective description but I can't think of a better word for it. I just find it a little too mid-focused and compressed perhaps, so the opposite of that?

i don't need much more than a bluesy crunch from it - certainly not talking metal!

    Any thoughts?
    Cheers

i know exactly what you mean..and i had the same issue with the boogie until i got the extension cab...it had a EV in and i got a 2x12 cab with the celestion in to run with it and it worked wonders. it opened the sound right up....its maybe worthwhile trying a ext. cab and see how it sounds then before you part with it..

wow. hmmmm. wonder what is involved in the mod? sounds very good on that particular video.

barney - i think that could well be factor. i'm using the orange ppc112 with a vintage 30, which i have made partially open back. I would certainly like to try a 2x12 with a V30 and a G12H to hear what that sounds like.

Dr Z Carmen Ghia. Just two knobs, volume and tone. I have one of these as my backup amp, and it fits your requirements pretty well. It does break up easily but in a blues-rock rather than a metal way. Might be worth researching it, and the Maz 18 might also be of interest, as it has more tonal variation and can sound quite Fendery but with more bark. It's probably more open sounding than the Ghia, but both are worth a try if ever you are near Peach Guitars. They don't often come up on eBay, but a Ghia head recently sold for £510, so someone got a bit of a bargain:

I don't know, but I agree. I too find the stock TT too middy/muddy and compressed. While the result of that doesn't sound *exactly* like the Marshall - it would be difficult given the huge difference in circuitry and the extra power of the big amp - it's very close considering, and certainly sounds *miles* better than the stock TT.

Surely the Hayden Mofo (or Mini Mofo) would be perfect...?

Didn't like the one I tried... nasty grainy-sounding thing, oddly both muddy and harsh at the same time. Got worse as you turned it up too.

The above gentleman has stated that "certain brand" of amps has to him a rather "neutral" sound. Such a finding COULD be interpreted as "open" in that they do not stamp a huge character on the guitar?

Try the EL34 powered 20watter from the range tho' you might want to budget for a better speaker.

I'm just about to apply that British Glory mod to my TT. It's basically changing capacitor and resistor values. I'll let you know later how I get on.
