i use gravity picks and the one i use when playing live has a hole through it where the thumb and finger grips...it dosnt go anywhere...its not a big hole...maybe a couple of mm...it might be worth modifying a pick with a couple of small holes and see iff it helps to grip

Thanks for the great ideas guys
Tried to get a Big Stubby yesterday but local shop only had snotty assistant and Little Stubbies..
I wouldn't want to go to a lighter pick - I use a 1 and it seems much better than my previous choice of .7

Re the loose fist: I didn't think I had splayed fingers but sure enough my hand is quite open
Damn it's hard undoing bad habits..
What's wrong with the open hand anyway?
(I know my fingernails keep hitting the scratchplate area)

I do try to get my hand off the bridge if I'm not using it for palm muting and seem to be ok at hitting the string/strings I want - I'm not playing solos style, more rhythm stuff with bits of string picking
Plus I try to not use too much point of the pick

Eric J technique - hmm might need to come back to that in a year or two

It's a never ending vigil on avoiding bad habits !

My picking has always been my weak point and I do the exact same thing. I just can't play with the side of my index finger holding the pick - feels ridiculous. But at a slant as it is, often during faster passages, the connection with the string is so light that there is barely any noise at all. Oh well - I should take the time to correct this... probably wont.

Have you tried a heavy pick?

This is all fascinating stuff to me as my picking hand has always been my biggest weakness. I came to electric guitar from many years of being an acoustic fingerstyle player and "Picks", "Plectrums", call them what you will have always presented a major challange. I thought I had got my complete lack of control tamed when I finally discovered V Picks, but it was short lived. I like their tactile feel, but slowly but surely all the old problems that have been described came flooding back. Onle a few weeks ago I was seriously considering going back to a Thumb Pick to try and stop the problems with the pick rotating etc, but thanks to a forumite recommending the Dava Control Pick, my problems "seem" to be being banished.

Strangely enough I've been playing a lot recently, with the usual Dunlop 0.55mm rigid stainless pick, smooth to boot, and not noticed the rotating problem. Haven't forgotten that I promised to remain vigilant though ...

I do it all the time....give up trying to stop it! A heavy pick does help but still for me doesn't totally cure it. I know the correct narrower thinner point of the pick will allow for more speed as its a smaller area of resistance...but still I don't worry about it too much as I can play fast enough and am not into the speed thing per say. And well my hero Brian May uses a coin...whats the right edge on that?

I always use a 1.5mm dunlop (or something like that), so pretty heavy all round I think.
Practised the other day for yonks and had a great run! I think the problem is... with the downstroke the pick is well tight against my thumb and its controlled.. for upstrokes it goes a bit more loose and I pull away from the guitar as well as moving up in order to make the strike. When I grip tighter it becomes better. As painful as it is, I'm going to start putting the pick at the side of my forefinger and compare.

Its a good idea to get used to moving your grip around while your're playing. I move my pick a lot when Im playing pinch harmoncs chaging the angle as well as the amount of tip showing, same goes for very fast palm muted parts or tremelo picking where i try to get the point amlost exactly perpendicular so the upstrokes are smoother. Then if im playing arpeggios or more sedate parts i live to have my pick quite slanted as that seems to give a more solid sound for m.
