Default L R Baggs Passive pickup.

Anyone got one of these or have used one. If so, what was your opinion of it.
I've had a Fishman Neo D single coil in the past and thought it was bobbins, so I don't want to get stung again.
    Many thanks in advance.

I don't have a passive, but I have an M1A and it's absolutely the best acoustic pickup I've ever heard.

I haven't tried one for a while, but I thought it was probably the best of the passives. The active M1A is much better though - I agree with stickyfiddle.

In any case, either the M1 or M1A keep their value extremely well, so you won't lose much if you buy either and decide to change

I used to have an M1A. Unlike stickyfiddle and ICBM I wasn't that keen on the sound tbh (a bit too 'electric' sounding), but it is highly rated.

It's pretty heavy though, don't know if this has an effect on the resonance of the soundboard when it's clamped across the soundhole.

Personally, I prefer soundboard pickups such as the K&K Pure Western or even a good undersaddle such as a B-Band.

It's hard to know which is best for you - you need to be able to try out guitars fitted with each, ideally, but not really practical.

On the subject of soundhole pickups. The guitarist from Lau (on Jools Holland) had a small white pickup in the top left hand side of the soundhole, anyone know what this is. Sorry I don't have a link.

It does definitely sound more magnetic than piezo, but I'm coming to prefer that...

Probably not much, since it's also very close to the end of the fingerboard, and the top probably doesn't vibrate very much there.

I like the K&K a lot too - but not the B-Band, for reliability reasons and because it requires an onboard preamp.

Soundboard pickups are much more feedback-prone than soundhole magnetics though - and also a bit more than undersaddles - if that matters.

yes, but I cannot remember what make/model it is/was - Ive seen them before - its a mic based p/up that fits inder the sound board with a small volume control wheel IIRC that is what you can see.

    I think/assume

    EDIT

did it look something like this ??

didn't see it but sounds like it might be the LR Baggs Anthem http://lrbaggs.com/anthem/ or Anthem SL http://www.lrbaggs.com/anthemsl/
    Red ones are better.

Yes, it's that kind of thing, but I think it was a little smaller than the Baggs anthem.
