On the walk I've stopped to chat with neighbours grumbling about the cost of living while at the same time discussing their plans for Christmas and the presents they intend to buy. People are vexed about their declining living standards. They complain about the Government, the weather, the cost of fuel, next door's dog barking, buses not arriving on schedule, etc, etc. But, for me, this represents daily life and the country I love, England. It may not be perfect, but at least I'm not dodging bullets and missiles; living under the reign of an oppressive regime and fearing a knock on my door; walking several miles to collect a pail of polluted water ...

On reflection, life's not all bad
    Nailed it IMO.

Intervention with these individuals is basically at a point where the damage is done and it becomes about preventing further damage ( prison, detox, etc).

It is a social problem because excess consumption of alcohol not only effects those individuals but their families/friends/colleagues/ other people in the pub, club ,street, bus ( as a regular bus user its no joke!)/tax payers. I spent a couple of saturday evenings with my late father, when he was elderly and frail, in A and E departments and other people's excess alcohol consumption had a direct effect on him, me and my mother. Trying to get adequate care for him and comforting my mother in an environent of alcohol fuelled bedlam was just not something that we should have had to accept.

It, therefore, needs social solutions. Might be difficult to know what those are but minimum unit pricing doesn't strike me as one of the better suggestions.
how many people were in those hospitals with alcohol related injuries? 10? 100? - how many people were out drinking that night and had a brill time without ending up in hospital?

going out on the piss is great - the "drinking culture" in the uk is the best in the world (apart from ireland maybe) - i wouldnt change a thing

Tend to agree. A decent night on the lash is always good fun (unless you try and match LoFi pint for pint, in which case you'll just vomit). Mind you going out on the piss was great in Madrid when I lived there, as it is in the US, France and everywhere else I've been out on the piss in. Mind you raving was excellent when my body could still take the hangover and I really like smoking too.

Scotland (or rather Glasgow, Ayrshire and Lanarkshire, known as the Buckfast triangle) has clearly got issues with alcoholism and buckfast is pretty much the drink of the devil. It's not called wreck the hoose juice for nothing. Maybee they should put Temgesics or Temazepam in it instead of caffine...

Something I really don't get is the "Lads Night Out" ritual.
A number of my mates go on these every so often and there seems to be some kind of rule that you have to keep piling down the pints and shots until you lose consciousness. Without exception none of the people I know actually enjoy them and see them as a bit of an ordeal. There is lots of talk of hiding in the toilets to avoid having to take part in rounds of shots or pouring pints into plant pots etc. I do sometimes wonder if anyone is actually having fun or if they are all forcing each other to drink more and more while secretly wishing they could just stop.

Our bassist (from Glasgow) has echoed ICBM's sentiments that by far the biggest problem for the Scots is Buckie.

I just had this vision of the monks of Buckfast abbey kicking back on sunloungers in Barbados on the profits, all the while defending their product by saying it is responsibly enjoyed by the majority of purchasers.

Of course they're sipping Pina Coladas, rather than their own brew.
