yep, and then in the workspace I get a picture sized checkerboard...

if I use something like the brush on it it then reveals parts of the picture underneath but I then cant do anything else to the picture..

I now from experience that some versions of Photoshop Elements had problems with the RAW files produced by certain makes/models of camera - if you haven't already, try googling to see if anyone else has had the same problem.

How au fait are you with photoshop? Do you know about layers and stuff? The checkerboard is what you see when your layers are transparent. Your video card might not be capable of displaying the image under the present settings, so you're just seeing what's underneath, which is the checkerboard.

Try updating the drivers for your video card, then going to Edit -> Preferences -> performance and change the drawing mode from advanced to normal.

drivers for the video card are uptodate - but as to knowing photoshop I hardl;y use it to be honest. Im using the images from stored on the computer would there be any difference from getting them directly from the camera?? Don't know if the Canon programme or windows would have changed the format to store it on the computer.

is Camera Raw up to date?

instead of opening from within PS try right clicking on an image and choose 'open in PS/CS6' or whatever it says.
