His playing was jaw-dropping, and he was actually a proper showman instead of just standing there and playing... really kept everyone entertained while playing the most amazing stuff.

And oh my fucking god, that tone! When he kicked into Weeping China Doll with his seven-string, the sound was so awe-inspiring it made me want to openly weep.

And in between the doors opening and the gig starting they were playing Devin Townsend's magnificent new album over the PA. That was cool too... Steve's old singer getting some air time of his own!

    Agreed.

I was just listening to Mediterranean Sundance with Al Di Meola on the "Friday Night in San Francisco" album and I think you might be right. Shredding with emotion, on an accoustic guitars in harmony with each other. I know Vai has duetted with Meola on this track as well but he doesn't come close to Paco De Lucia doing live on an accoustic( and I love Vai ).

I saw the guitar trio in Madrid in an open Air concert. It was jaw dropping. I've seen Paco several times, and he never fails to amaze. If you don't have it, buy Sirocco. It is an amazing recording.

The tone was massive. It was a camera shot. I was on the second row from the front.

No shouts for Derek Trucks, John Schofield, Michael Landau, Robben Ford or Larry Carlton?

I get what people are saying about technique over the song as I'd love to like Mike Stern (from a technical standpoint I don't think there's many on par with him) but I find I can only appreciate his abilities rather than like his music.

My faves are the top row plus Jimi, Jimmy, EC and SRV...... I can't pick one though I do have a Jimi Hendrix tattoo and the art work from Led Zep 4.

A lot of people seem to confuse the words Guitarist, muscians and Songwriter. Neil Young is a great musican and songwriter. He is a fucking awful guitar player. If you want to objectively judge a guitar player then ability and knowledge are pretty important. You take somebody like Vai. He could pretty much fill in for any guitar player in any rock setting and most other settings, and play all of the right notes. No body would talk about how good a violinist was if he could not ace all of the caprices and sightread an orchestral piece and play it. I love Jimmy Page's music, but it would be daft to claim he was a great technical player. A really good player can sit in for pretty much anybody, play their set and most of the audience would not notice if they were only using their ears. Could Neil Young play a Vai set? Not a chance. Could Vai play a Neil Young set? Very easily. Therefore on an objetive measurement Vai is a better guitar player.
