    Default Entering the fretless zone...

I fancy giving fretless bass playing a pop. Any recommendations for an entry level instrument?

I quite fancy this as I've had good experiences with Squier basses and J-style fender basses.

I got my first fretless last year.

Actually - I had a new neck built for an existing Status.

I was very nervous about spending £400 on a plain board fretless that I might suck at.... but it has become my favourite bass.

Word of warning though - do not slap on a wood neck fretless - it will rip the board up.

Gary Willis (Tribal Tech) has some nice hints in his 101 Hints n Tips bass book about fretless setup. You might find them on line too though.

I've got a black Dean Edge 4 fretless that I've barely used. Fretmeister has tried it and thought it a decent instrument. If yer interested.

I find fretless too hard! I de-fretted a bass and played it for about 3 months, and I was still as shite as the first time I used it so I just gave up. Making it sound fretlessish is easy in your bedroom, but I found it was hard to make it sound good in a band situation. I just ended up sliding every note.and I bet theres abit more to it than that!

    It is quite fun though!

    I did!

    It was very nice.

I liked it that much that inspired me to spend proper money on a Status!

Shouldn't be using roundwounds on a fretless!!!

I think I'll be ok; my ear for pitch/intonation is quite good and I managed to bluff a go on an upright bass without making too much of an arse of myself.

Slapping won't be a problem - I can't, but when I can, I'll use my workhorse fretted 5-string for that!

I dont! I'n not Les Claypool.

(Although one of the Vivify tracks has rounds on fretless for slap)

But even so - flats, being metal and harder that wood will still shag the board at the end of the neck where the thumb impact is.
