That's a great vid. I really love to hear Nile play. Love his massive contribution to music. This is one style I really like to study and along with a guitarist called Paul Jackson Jr, if you can get even close to those 2, you can cover some serious Funk, Soul and Jazz ground.

Looks like I will be learning a few more Chic tracks now I've seen this. I wonder what he'd make of my version of Thinking of You? On second thoughts, it's probably best I don't know.

Fantastic video. I've often neglected my rhythm playing practising scales and single note runs but people like Nile really make me refocus.

    Hi Bellycaster,

I know we share some similar tastes and as you've mentioned Paul Jackson Jr, have you ever seen this instructional video by the great man - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BXufB17zcgo and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NWOH6e5UXpg
He was also the American Idol house band guitarist for quite a few years and he's the house guitarist on one of the US chat shows now, can't remember which.

Another great that can be mentioned in the same breath as Nile R and Paul J is the late David Williams (Michael Jackson's long time guitarist). Want to hear his work? Listen to the heavily compressed funk riff toward the end of "Billie jean" and apparently that was what he played on the demo and they kept it!

    Hi mate.

Those are great vids aren't they? I have seen them before as it happens. I would like to see the whole of that DVD. I think I would have to polish up my theory before tackling that though. He just makes it look and sound so easy. No problem copying what he's doing there but it's understanding WHAT he is doing and WHY that is important.

David Williams is great also isn't he? As you mentioned the funky riff in Billie Jean is superb. Am I right in thinking D.W also played the funky solo in Wanna Be Startin' Something? I can play that but only at 80% speed, damn, I got to get comfy with that one.

Other great Guitar parts and solos I think are really cool in MJ's stuff apart from the aforementioned and obviously "Beat It" are like "Don't Stop Till You Get Enough","Smooth Criminal","Speed Demon" and I think Dirty Diana was played by Billy Idol's guitarist.

    All good stuff.

I love when he talks about sneaking complex chord changes in to a pop song. There's stuff in there where I'd know I wasn't getting it right by playing more 'vanilla' chords but I'd never be able to hone in on what's actually going on (and when you listen to lots of covers the same is true of many guitarists).

They should invent a Guitar Hall Of Awesome. Then put him in it. And not get any more keys cut.
