Who said anything about 10s? Do you use them? If so it's not surprising you can't make a Martin sound good! *head in hands*

10s are good on some guitars, yes. Not on heavily-built dreadnoughts. Even on Gibsons - which are lighter built than Martins - I prefer 11s and wouldn't normally go lighter than that except on something small-bodied and fragile like an old LG with ladder bracing.

I would certainly never pick a Takamine for heavy strumming anyway, regardless of string gauge - or possibly for anything. I've always though they sounded dead and tinny... the only reason I could see for them becoming so popular was that - like Ovation before them - they had what was at the time the best electronics system, so people put up with the rest of the guitar. Now that's no longer necessary.

Don't worry too much about it, I still like my new Gibson semi even after I found out that the knob from Cast plays one .

You still don't like proper acoustics though .

At least we agree about Takamines!

Cobwebs on a piano is a good one.

That is the main reason my old teacher had that Tak Jumbo - the electronics system. He'd had it a while and it is around 7 years since I last had a lesson with him, but I always liked the sound of that guitar even with the 10s. It was fairly lightweight, spruce top, mahogany back and sides and mahogany neck/rosewood board. It was one of their more expensive models, but I've absolutely no clue which. Honestly it was nicer sounding than some acoustics I've tried since, maybe he got 'the' good one. He always maintained a clean player sounds better than a sloppy player with nicer gear, which is a fair point I think.

I play a BSG jumbo, spruce top, rosewood back and sides, mahogany neck/rosewood board. It is a very lightweight guitar, definitely lighter than my old teacher's Tak. It is strung with 11s in E, used to be 13s in D so I could sing with it but it turns out I can't sing so back to E it went. I have a pack of 12s in their box for the next string change, to see if I can play them this time around. [/manly hands]

Back on topic - Forsyths music on Deansgate in Manchester stock Simon and Patrick and Seagull, though I'm never convinced of how up to date their website is so best contacting them first to see what they have.
