i dislike that its starbucks (or amazon - or jimmy carr) who are getting the beating even though they are playing within the rules - if i had a little box on my contract that said "tick here if you would prefer to pay less tax" i would probably tick it - by all means change the laws to prevent liberty-taking but dont set the laws and cry foul when people use them to their advantage

Surely they'll just bang all the prices up?

Good luck to them (and Costa, Cafe Nero etc).

No, that's what they *sell*. Easily confused, I know.

But will Starbucks be able to hike the prices up enough to account for the increase in tax they'll be paying and stay competative with say Costa?

    And this.

Starbucks gets all its money from its customers. And the shareholders aren't going to roll over and go "Nah, we don't want our dividends this year", so the only option is they either pay their suppliers less or charge the customer more.

The government doesn't need more money. They need to actually try implementing some of these mythical cuts that are so often talked about, but never really implemented.

It'll be a return to the bad old days when we had to make coffee ourselves, in our own houses and offices, with like boiling water and milk, for pennies per cup. Where the hell will I get my middle class fairtrade ethnic muffins from? The CDs of over-priced peruvian pan flute music? The stupid little biscuits that come individually wrapped and cost as much as a packet of rich tea? Where will the yummy mums do their breast feeding? Where will all the mac wielding pseudo poet hipsters go????

Equally Starbucks & their shareholders don't want all the negative PR. Or a potential consumer boycott - which was looking like becoming a reality.
