I actually think that this is still up for debate. Certainly, when the number of pirates around Somalia started increasing a couple of years ago we started having much colder winters again. I'm currently researching what is the transmission vector between wooden legs, eye patches, and insult sord fighting and the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Once I've found it, I will wreak havoc on Internet message boards around the world where that graph has been used.

Frankly, I think my chances are much higher than the chance of an economist getting something important right!

Pirates do help prevent global warming.

By driving up the costs of delivering oil to the West by supertanker, they were a contributing factor in putting up fuel prices, which have reduced consumption, if only slightly.

It's certainly not the only or the largest factor by any means, but there's a very clear mechanism which would explain a causal link there.

Does that offset the impact of the extra diesel used by the navy ships that are now patrolling the area?

Armed Piracy Defence (APD)- Securing your ships at any given time, at high risk area's, around the World, including West Africa.

    Attention: Security Fleet Manager

    Dear Security Fleet Officer,

APD is one of the most savvy, private International combat maritime security company; a proven track record in West Africa, East Africa, the Straits of Malacca, the Red Sea & the Indian Ocean.

The West African Plan - (Description & Fees)
    ________________________________________________

Our West African structure is in place, missions can roll out without any delay.

Men and weapons board in Liberia and disembark in Liberia.

Re/Gulf of Guinea (AKA Nigerian waters) APD has an agreement with a Nigerian registered (South African owned) company, joint ventured with the Nigerian Navy to supply protection by mean of fast moving patrolled boats.
They escort the vessel as far as 200 miles into the Gulf of Guinea, up to the mooring point and stay there at all times. If the client wishes scheduling to be 24 hrs/day, that can get quite costly.

Armed men get on board in Liberia and stay on board.Tankers will not go into port over. The ship will moore onto an SPM to load or off-load their cargo.
These SPMs are off Nigerian waters; our men stay on board with the weapons. To bout, we have our patrol boat standing by in case of any incident.

If & when the tanker has to reach the port, (i.e.) Port Onne, we hand the weapons to fast patrol boats to store until we head back.

We at APD have the means & infrastructure in place; only a couple MarSec companies operate in West Africa, two at the most.

It is reassuring that they confirm there are no hidden fees as otherwise you might be worried that their prices were a bit cheap!

Is the Starbucks tax-avoidance scheme legal? If so, it would seem to me that it's down to my wonderful friends at HMRC (bless them) to sort out. If however they're as incompetent at sorting out the tax affairs of just one insignificant individual (yours truly), then Starbuck's lawyers can look forward to a lengthy process, and some new Porsches on the back of their earnings.

But once again, we have trial by Internet and the media. That's the thing I find more worrying, not the point that it's morally wrong for corporations to avoid tax. Corporations have been avoiding tax for as long as there's been taxes. It's a constant battle, HMRC retrospectively closes loopholes, and the corporations find new ways to circumnavigate them. For the corporate mandarins, morality never enters into it, it's simply about MONEY. And presumably, the more money the corporation generates, the more it's likely that it'll attract investors, and up goes the worth of the company etc, etc. At corporate board level, no-one survives long if they're not committed to making money, or saving it, and that's the driver.

I'm annoyed to think Starbucks, and all the others can get away with paying little or no tax, but frankly, I'm not surprised, given who they're up against.
