Default iPads and music making - advice please

The lad wants an iPad, mainly for Garageband and being able to whip up music quickly. Anyone got opinions on it? If he was to get one is there a minimum useable memory size for GB?

I've found it revolutionary for my music making. It got me back into electronic stuff too. regarding memory, usual story, get as much as you can afford. But I would say 32 min.

There are tons of music apps for the ipad, loads of studio software. Garageband is very good, but things like nanostudio and isequence are worth ceking out. Garageband is, as you'd expect, aimed at getting adequate results, asap, but its lacking when it comes to anything relatively sophisticated, such as post recording and production.

There are some really great synths available too, such as soundrizer, alchemy, animoog, crystal, and that's just the surface.

I use the ipad hooked up to an irig MIDI and controller keyboard, then have it connected to the PC to record through Sonar. All the stuff in my soundcloud link in my sig are done using this setup, so it should give you an idea of what a (very much so) amateur can do with a simple setup.

    cheers

    Hi,

I was considering buying a basic digital recorder (to record some rhythm tracks, to allow me to play lead over), but I do actually have a mini iPad (64gb).

Would this mini iPad be capable of fulfilling my requirements (with an iRig I guess)? If so, can you suggest any apps?

    Thanks,

    Mike

    MIke,

Take it you mean recording guitar leads? Yeah, you could get an irig, which comes with a very cut down version of amplitube which you can record into actually. If you want something that is easy to use, but pretty powerful, get Garageband. It has a load of stuff in it including a sampler, and amps, and is really easy to get to grips with. You get 8 tracks to record into, but you can merge tracks into one, so you have a load really. Great app to start with.

The ipad mini should be fine in terms of processing power.
