I reckon he'd holding out on you regarding his musical tastes - find out what they are, then regardless of what you think of them, base as much as you can around that whenever possible.

I had (wasted) lessons as a kid and unfortunately sometimes people seem to think they have the monopoly on good taste, and they can enlighten you.

Had my music teacher taught me how to play a scale and a few licks over a bit of Aerosmith or Guns n' Roses, I probably would've kept playing, and I'd be a lot better than I am now.

    Okay, best consult his iPod.

There was some 'Maroon 5' (Payphone) which can be a little 'produced' and some 'Fun' which my ears were struggling with. I think things work best initially if one can learn a part which you can identify on the recording, no?

I tried inspiring a teenager once and now I have to sign on a register at the police station...

    [it's been a long day]

My son wanted to learn the riff to Iron Man. Despite not being able to play anything else he stuck at it, learned it and then said he was done, he didn't want to learn anything else.

Good suggestions so far but make sure you give him something really easy like some Led Zep riffs or as already mentioned Black Sabbath. Just a simple riff that he can master right away, I used to teach over 40 students a week and I had my share of similar teens(as also mentioned I suspect most were Dad driven), and this would give them a sense of accomplishment and send them off digging through their music fav's for more. Seven Nation Army (White Stripes) was another ringer for this.

He shouldn't need inspiring, playing guitar is the coolest thing in the world. I saw "Jimi Plays Monterey" on C4 one night in 1989 and was never the same again.

Yeah, you'd think...I was unstoppable when I first started!

This lad lives in the middle of nowhere, has iffy internet connectivity, no iPod, and only a handful of mp3s to his name. I was expecting a bit more fire but maybe he just needs a hand to get started. I'm hearing all the right things from his mum!
