It's such a long time since I've had a firewood guitar that I think I forget how shit some guitars can be. Even though I've got some cheapies they are carefully selected and set up.

well a bad set-up never helps. but anyone with more than a few guitars must notice how construction style can affect natural sustain of an instrument. its not always a good/bad thing as long as its not down to an actual fault

The sustain on the bass strings of my fanned fret guitar is awesome. much better than a comparable guitar with straight frets, and i do have comparable guitars. Its a single construction element that noticeably increases the sustain on those strings on that guitar, rather than a fault in all my other guitars making their sustain worse (they still have more than enough)

to go a bit deeper. that single construction element doesn't just make the note ring out for longer. the note rings better and clearer, more of the fundamental and less overtones. the string is vibrating more efficiently and this lets it vibrate for longer so we notice more sustain, but its all part of a bigger tonal picture that may or may not be suitable for all applications
