Recent years? Candid camera shows were doing this before god was a boy... much comedy is about humiliation and has no long term negative... but... There's a fine line between enough humiliation for a funny and bullying (havent listened to this one, as I'm not that interested)...

However, did the gag give the nurse the push over the edge? Or the treatment by managers/colleagues? Or is it purely co-incidence?

Could it be that this was a deeply troubled and depressed person who happened to have been the butt of a joke just before they topped themselves? Someone might have said hello that morning - did THAT contribute? Someone might have not said hello, did THAT contribute? We will likely never know - the phone gag could have been taken in the spirit is was intended but the nurses mum could have lost a long battle with cancer... or the idea of public humilation was so bad that they took their own life rather than bring shame to their family (seen it in a film!)... we just don't know

So, before we Lynch a DJ and a Senior Nurse lets take a breath and calm down. (Unless that DJ is one of those annoying chimps with a mic from Kiss, Heart or Radio one, in which case lets have a good old bonfire and burn the lot of them alive)

I'm pretty sure candid camera got the permission of it's victims but yeah you're right humiliation entertainment isn't new BUT (and maybe this is me getting old) it seems to be a lot nastier now.
Did this nurse or the hospital give permission for the recording to be aired? I doubt it. They made sure that they cleared themselves with the legal department though. Humiliating people is very very damaging whether you have a history of mental ilness or not, infact it can cause it. And yes, just one incident like what the nurse was subjected to can have a detrimental and long lasting impact upon a person. Why is the mental well being of a person any differen't to their physical. What I mean by that is, that, we don't watch real life people being ran over or assaulted by entertainment companies in the name of entertainment; why is mental assault differen't?
I hope that the hopspital sues

As for DJ's Tossers the lot of em, they all sound the fucking same and act as if they're 14yrs old.

You might be right though the call might have nothing to do with her death. The DJ still sounds like a wanker though

many years ago a cousin of mine trained as a radio journalist, she said that, unlike TV journos, radio journos have to obtain permission from the interviewee before they interview and broadcast. Dunno if that is still the case tho, nor how it would apply to this case.

The difference with candid camera was they got permission before broadcasting and the pranks were usually setup by family and friends, and they were pretty harmless.

I was out in the car listening to the radio this afternoon and unconfirmed reports [from an unnamed colleague] indicated the nurse was deeply upset by the prank. The hospital were supporting her, but she's now dead. It appears the hospital are linking the two events.

People react in different ways. A similar prank [telephone based] played on a woman I worked with by two colleagues resulted in her being very upset, walking out of her job and becoming depressed [we convinced her to come back after she'd received an apology]. She was from India and didn't understand that the joke played on her was meant to be harmless fun - she took it very personally. I can't imagine how she'd have felt if she'd been subjected to online tweets and ridicule - some of the tweets from the DJs in Oz were pretty close to the bone and they were due to make some more revelations today.

well the interweb has gone nuts, both DJ's Twitter accounts have gone, the stations FB page is being bombarded and their is a petition on Change.org to have them axed.

apology is up.. what has not helped(something that may be down to timezones) is how long it has taken and how the DJs bragging about how good the prank were still readable after the news of her death..

blame, reason and all that aside its a sad story.. and again with a Royal connection.
