    Default Small car

It's time to buy my son a small car. I used to be interested in cars at one time, but not any more, so am clueless about what's good, what's bad and what's downright awful.

He needs something economic, and cheap to insure, no big engines, and diesel is an option. He's 23, and had a licence since he was 17, but not had car insurance before. I'm think something between £1,500 - £2,500 to spend, depending on what's available.

Any suggestions as to what models I could look at? Fiesta? Corsa?

    Honda Civic.
They are fairly underpowered but roomy.
    Economical and safe.

I downsized from a people-carrier a few years ago when I was skint. I got a secondhand Fiesta 1.25 Climate and I have to say that once I got used to the lack of proper grunt it has been amazing. Cheap and reliable to run and the zetec engine is amazing. I do a lot of motorway miles and it holds its own in the fast lane with bigger motors until I have to accelerate, then it takes an age to speed up and yer beemers and Audis are off into the distance, but at cruising speed it just works. When I can afford it, in about a years time, I will get a more powerful car, as I like driving something with a bit of torque for all the usual cliched reasons, but until then my little Fiesta has been a very very good car.

Oh and my missus also downsized from a people-carrier to a Honda Civic and she loves it.

Another vote for a Ford Fiesta. My niece bought one for about £1,200 when she started her first job as a teacher in September. Well built, reliable, cheap to insure and run. I think her car as an 1100 cc engine.

I really liked my Fabia, but avoid the 1.4 diesel. The 1.2 petrol (I had one as a courtesy car) was nippy enouugh around town, happy at motorway speeds (though not much acceleration left) and very quiet - one of them would probably be affordable insurance-wise.

    What's wrong with the 1.4?

I'm considering one as my next car. I've got the 1.9 diesel at the moment which is ace.

I had the 1.9. The 1.4 is reportedly noisier and less reliable (as well as being pig-slow).

does it 'have' to be that small ? Id say go for a Focus - a lot more practical............assuming the insurance is OK of course

Cheers guys, I'll have check the insurance quotes for the ones you suggested. I did get a quote a while back for a 1.2 Fiesta, came out at £780, which I thought was reasonable, but I guess the bigger the car, the bigger the premium. A Focus would probably be more, but I'll check. Fiesta prices seem high, too?
