    Default Re-loopers ?

How do loopers/ phrase samplers work in a rig ?
Do you need two amps or inputs for your rythmn and lead tracks?
I`ve seen a few people use them live but havn`t a clue how they fit in with
the rest off your effects and amps!
    Thanks.

Plug it in at the end of your chain (preferably in the FX loop). Record something, then play it back, while it's playing back, you play over it. Quite simple really

So you can record a cleanish rythmn track and then play a lead over it using drive pedals etc in front of it ?

Check out this guy. I saw him perform this years ago and it really opened my mind to what you can do with a looper. He's got a separate board for his guitar and his vocals, both using Line 6 DL4s to do the looping.

(and keep watching till the end, he's puts the 'half speed' function to great use)

Looping live can be scary. The key is getting the first loop down and with the join in time (so the end of the first phrase is on the beat for the start of the first repeat). That only comes from practice with your own looper and your own technique.

I've used a Boss RC-20xl for this, and used to perform in an acoustic duo, me on guitar and a female singer. We had two big loopy numbers in the set, a version of U2s With or Without You (pretty much based on a 4 chord sequence so easy to adapt for looping) and a reworking of Nirvann's Smells Like Teen Spirit (again just based on a simple chord sequence repeating for the whole song).

Once the first loop is down it was then pretty easy to add in simple fills or bass notes, like Howie Day does in that clip.

Using a looper also actually gives you time to think and prepare for each new loop as the music keeps going! You can actually get away with not playing anything for a whole phrase while the loop just runs.

Having an "erase last loop" function is pretty important of course as the last thing you want is a mistake to be repeated throughout the performance. As I said the worse bit is the first one, as if that's out the whole thing's a car crash. I saw KT Tunstall once looping her "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree", the first loop was too quick so by the time she got to singing she just had to can it, and start again!

Yes. You have to be a little careful with pedal placement/amp distortion though. All the looper does is record whatever signal you put into it and keep repeating it. So if you have a dirt pedal *before* the looper then you can vary the dirt in the different loops. If your dirt pedal is *after* the looper then all the loops will be dirty (or none of them).
