Default recording with a blackstar HT-1

    Hi,

I've got the urge to start recording. My only problem is that I know absolutely nothing about how to record me playing guitar.

I own a blackstar HT-1r combo which has a line out. So my question is, how to I get my blackstar connected to my mac for recording and what software is good for a mac to record?

    Thanks for your help. :-)

My mate has one of these (or I should say the 15w Head version). From memory the line out has a cabinet emulation which means it can sound pretty decent just directly using a jack lead straight into your interface or mixer. I remember trying it, and it worked (but I stil preferred the mic'd up sound).

You will more than liekly need an audio interface of some sort. Just google that, and you'll find loads of info on whats good and whats not. If you're only really needing on or two inputs, then they aren't expensive. They are generally USB connection too so its dead easy to set up.

As Fraz says, some form of audio interface (USB or Firewire are by all accounts pretty much as good as each other now, and either would be more than up to the task of recording one or two tracks of audio at a time) so look for something with one or two microphone preamps with phantom power (which will allow you to use condenser mics should you wish to - take my word for it at the moment, it's worth it ). Presonus, Focusrite, Mackie, Tascam, Line 6, RME if you can stretch to it - there's literally hundreds, have a look!

Garageband is perfect for getting to grips with recording, and as you're using a Mac it has the added advantages of a/ being free, and b/ leading you very nicely towards Logic Express and Logic Pro if/when you outgrow it.

Let me know a rough budget (as you'll need a microphone as well, ideally, and also a decent pair of headphones and/or studio monitors if you don't have anything suitable already) and I'll be able to be more specific.

    Thanks for the response chaps.
Thebeagle, my budget will be a few hundred quid (say £300 for now). I've got some decent headphones that I sometimes use with the blackstar.

For that sort of money you will not beat the Native Instruments Komplete audio6. The emulated output can go into lines 3 and 4* leaving you two mic channels for the yodelling. You also get a copy of Cubase LE4 which will keep you out of other mischief for quite a time.

*You will need a stereo 1/4" jack to two 1/4" mono jacks lead (shows you in the handbook). I am sure Rob can oblige?

Thanks for the advice, I'm going to look at one of those native instrument plugins. Any ideas on where to get a 1/4" jack to 2 x 1/4" jack cables from?
    Cheers :-)

The Ka6 is an interface, not a plugin. Tho' you get Cubase LE6 and Kontakt player, shedload of samples and Guitar Rig 4 for free atmo' I think.

Cable? Told ya! Our very own Rob, Kabl cables.

Oh! And Traktion, could not get on myself..

I record using a Blackstar Dist-X pedal's emulated output through a Line6 AI with pretty good results. Same pre-amp basically so you should be onto a winner once you get plugged up.

I found using amps sims with the pedal can get a tad noisy though so I generally only use cab sims. You can get a really wide range of tones that way. Judicious use of different cabs and varying the drive covers pretty much all the bases. Then I use Twin Reverb and JC120 sims for the clean tones and Jazz stuff.

And so in true Blue Peter style, here's one I made earlier.

Light travels faster than sound, some people appear bright until they make a noise.
