Default Cool guitar v Good guitar

For my 40th I got a guitar that I thought was cool.

    A J Mascis purple jazzmaster.

There's a few things I'd probably change on it (pickups, maybe bridge) but my main issue with it is the neck. It's a good neck, nice big frets, smooth, but probably a bit big for my tender hands. Thumb over for Hendrixy stuff is a bit of a struggle.

Now I'm thinking: just buy something more practical and stuff the aesthetics.

So if I am to become the boring old man I always pitied, what reasonably priced (used) all rounder would you recommend?

(I love a good neck single coil sound).

I'll swap it with you for a lovely, played-in, Squier Strat!

Seriously though, I'm surprised that you find the neck uncomfortable. I have the Squier Mascis and it has a much chunkier neck than my AVRI Jazzmaster but it is very playable and very comfortable indeed. I sort of assumed that the Squier and Fender Mascis necks would have been the same.

It is comfortable and playable, it's just when it gets to the thumb over bit that I have problems.

    So why compromise?

If I could find a neck that was similar but probably a bit shallower I'd be cock a hoop!

Second hand PRS. Good single coil and humbucker tones and ergonomically perfect.

Plenty of bargains to be had.

I did put PRS in my original post but didn't want to influence anyone!

What about their necks though, I read a lot of 'wide fat' when there's a discussion on PRS guitars.

Don't think I could stretch to a proper PRS, would have to be an SE.

SE's are mostly wide fat profile but its not as fat as a US one. I found it really comfortable on the one I had but I like fat necks. I'm not a big fan of their wide thin necks but that might be down to wide thin usually being on 24 fret necks.

Is the thin part referring to depth?

Yes the width etc is the same but their thinner. I like the extra girth and shoulders of the wide fat it's my favourite neck profile.
