Default My Band's New Demo Tracks

First mixes of my band's demo tracks can be heard via the link below (At least, I HOPE so...never used Soundcloud before..)

    Constructive criticism welcomed.

Bearing in mind we are primarily a wedding band, so don't be too harsh on the choice of songs!

My personal favourites are Moondance and Land of a Thousand Dances...probably ego-driven though as they are the ones with guitar solos in!

    Good stuff

Being critical (only because you asked). I think there is possibly a touch too much reverb on the vocals and it has the separated sound of being multitracked rather than sounding like it was recorded in the same room (perhaps put a bit of room verb on the whole thing). It would probably be beefed up considerably by liberal application of a mastering compressor.

    Nice solos on each

Enjoyed "Shake Your Tail Feather" as well, great party song.

Could do with being beefed up overall, but as a demo it sounds good, certainly bookable to a wedding/function.

Can't do the link from here so my brilliant insights will have to wait until another day ( FWIW probably my favourite version of Moondance was it played as an Irish jig/reel although I can't remember the artist for the life of me). Just out of interest any recording details? Zoom thingamebob or studio?

I keep feeling we should do another demo, not really to get gigs but as a nice memento of the days before the bass player finally cracked and stabs the sax player to death with his own mouthpeice.

    Thanks all

Was done at Univibe studios which is across the road from PMT in Birmingham. Multi-tracked and mixed.

Agree re: the mix/ mastering of it all...Sounded great in the studio when we were listening back to the rough tracks, not so hot now it's been mixed...

Not especially pleased with my guitar, some real shoddy stuff that had to be tidied up, but the solos were improvised for the most part and I am happy with those at least.

But yes, thanks for the comments

There is some real mixing of tenses going on there. Tut, tut.

I'll look up Univibe then, would be pretty central for the members of our band should we all agree to such a thing.

Having done a few studio demos in years gone by that 'sounded great in the studio, what happened to the mix now I've got it home' thing always seems to happen.

Finally having a listen. The Black Eyed Peas and Elbow songs are just so...well,I can't give any sensible comments (they'd be back to the bar moments for me at a wedding) but on everything else the playing is really tight and there are nice, melodic solos. The short Page-esque solo on Tailfeather particularly. The guitar-vocal interaction at the end of Moondance is really good.Maybe more of this elsewhere or would that start to sound messy? Some things suit the singer a bit better than others but that's to be expected on a set like this.

    Cheers ,Eric!

I agree about the guitar/ vocal interaction on Moondance. That was actually something that we did in the studio for the first time, will definitely be incorporating that into the live setting.

I'm also not 100% sold on the Elbow or Black Eyed Peas numbers...the BEP one always goes down great (why...I have no idea) and the Elbow one's been requested as a first dance a couple of times, hence we chose it for the demo, but for me the absence of strings is glaring and it needs at least a twin guitar lead going on....or maybe that would Thin Lizzy it up a bit too much
