    They aren't. They are OK pedals, but not in the same league as the original version.

    The new ones do rather have that top end fizz thing going on I find. I have to tweak the eq on the amp with some of these pedals but I still like it. The thing is marshalls new pedals are great for two reasons, one is that they are built like a brick - you'll never break the damn thing; the second is that, imo, they sound slightly better to some of the Boss equivilents.

    Honestly you'd be surprised what a DS-1 can do, Frusciante uses one. But in general RATs are the most versatile pedals, if you don't mind the signature "dirty" kind of tone they give you.

    i'd considered a ds1 but apparently the're piss poor, but if theyre good enough for john...

    He does use a modded one though I think...? Personally I've found many uses for the unaltered DS-1, but then I consider it more of a fizzy fuzz than a proper distortion. Great on my PBass.
