    Default Toaster Rage

Why can't they make toasters to fit the poxy bread? I've got what was supposed to be a 4-slice toaster, and I can't get 2 slices in longitudinally, one has to stand up on its end, thereby leaving a 25mm band of untoasted bread, which is bloody annoying.

The standard Warburton's Toastie bread is 145mm x 120mm, and therefore the toaster slot needs to be 290mm for 2 slices to be toasted end to end, but it's only 240mm long. Or, they need to make the slot deep enough so both slices can be toasted in the upright position, and it needs to be 25mm deeper.

I can only assume that they don't have Warburton's Toastie bread in Taiwan, and therefore nothing suitable to use as a pattern. Really, there should be a British Standard for toasters and sliced bread. Some kind of traffic light system would do, with the toaster and bread branded as red, amber, or green, then you'd know if your toaster will be suitable for your bread.

(Mrs C shaking her head in disbelief as I'm measuring up the bread and toaster with a retractable tape this morning.)

    Whack it under the grill...

The bread, not the toaster that is.

...and no matter what setting you have it on. you either have to push it down a second time, or get burnt toast.

I could do, but that rather defeats the object of having a toaster, and isn't very energy-efficient, either.

    True.

They should have some kind of pre-settable sensor on them that distinguishes brown-ness. Just timing it is simply not enough, I always end up with underdone or buggered toast.

No, it's not restricted to maritime. But we did use to make cheese on toast by laying the toaster on its side. Pissed the leckies off big time what with all the melted cheese fucking up the toasters all the time!
