    Default Laney Cub owners......

Been eye-ing these up over the festive period and have seen some great (tempting) prices...... So what made you choose the Cub 10 (6v6) over the Cub 12 (el84) -purely the tube voicing? or the speaker size? Its a shame they dont do a cub 12/6v6 with 12 inch speaker, which would be perfect for me.

Also how useable is the 1watt input?.

I have a Cub 12R. It was an earlier model, which had some documented reliability problems, but a service from a tech and some component upgrades solved that.

I prefer the sound of a 12" speaker, with the looser and warmer bass. The digital reverb is also quite good. The 1 watt input is very usable, you will get a good crunch sound at low volumes.

So you opted for the Cub 12 purely on speaker size over voicing?

I also wanted reverb. If Laney had done a Cub 12R 6V6 I may well have bought it. But I thought the Cub 10 without reverb sounded a bit boxy for my liking.

    I had a 12R which I bought mainly for the pre-amp voicing.

It sounded great. Even better through an Eminence Legend GB128.

I used it almost exclusively on the <1W setting as it was only at home.

I moved it on because it wasn't getting the use it deserved (i.e. being cranked at 15W)

did you swap the speaker in the cab? or plug into an external?

i got the cub12 and can find it a little boxy sometimes, seems a bit missing on the low end.

any other (budget end) speaker recommendations?

I swapped the speaker in the cab.

The stock (Celestion Rocket 50?) speaker is a definite weak-point.

I went for the 12R because of the pre-amp - which is the same as the JCM800. Sounds great.

The speaker wasn't so much of an issue for me, I like how it sounds and sometimes run the amp through my 2x12 V30 cab.

Just sold a Cub 12. Previously had a Cub 10, which I preferred for the Fendery 6V6 tones. But both are superb amps for the money. the <1w input is very useable. I didn't think either sounded boxy, mainly due to the open back design.

bought the 12r because the 10 looked too small to be serious other than practise. (dont know much about amps). I love thee 12r, have swapped the speaker for a vintage 30, gigged with it in small pubs plenty loud enough unless you want pure cleans. people are amazed at what a loud full sound comes out of this quirky looking retro box. . tempted to get a harly benton 212 cab but its loud enough without it. the 1watt input is great for home but can still be seriously loud.
