I can't help think that if Hamer remained a boutique US brand, producing a fairly low amount each year at great quality it would still be around, and probably not owned by Fender.

that is essentially all hamer usa have been doing for the last few years. which supports your point about the eastern versions diluting the brand

I used to have a 1977 Hamer Special, which was a lovely little guitar.
Slim neck which was ideal for a small handed person (thats why i sold it in the end coz it was far to dainty in my bear paws) all mahogany body with twin humbuckers. Simple, quirky and raunchy as hell.
When i tried a kaman made one years later it felt like a generic soulless wannabe, it was ok but lifeless.
