It's not thinking in dorian - it's using dorian as a lens through which to percieve music.

My biggest BIGGEST issue with music is that it's easy to talk about it - far harder to extemporise - so what do people do?

that's right, they talk about it

Yes, I think koneguitarist should have the honour of starting the thread as it was his idea....
The conductor said I could get my bookbag and run around the hallway with it.

this is a very good point....everybody has different opinions based a lot of the time what has been read in a book...its a bit like knowing every word in a dictionary but not being able to write a story....it means a lot more to me when somebody actually demonstrates their ideas....other wise all the words and opinions dont really matter...

i think what im trying to say is iff we all practiced what we preached we would be much better players and more understood.....

barney, of all the people who post here, you are the first to step up to the plate and describe with sound in a minute blast over a backing track, that which some people (myself included) will happily argue about for days about as a result you're points are better expressed, succint and are their own proof.

To my mind, you follow a more Zen-like approach than you're describing. You preach what you've practised. As Carl Rogers put it
"In a person who is open to experience each stimulus is freely relayed through the nervous system, without being distorted by any process of defensiveness." - I see defensiveness in other people (myself included) in these kinds of threads but from you I see sharing which I admire and playing which I aspire to

I used to kind of think like that but now I think that if people want to get into theory and they enjoy it then great.
I like FX. I like building them, experimenting with them, generally farting about with them. If I spent more time playing I'd probably be a better player...but f**k it! I love playing guitar but I want to do other things too.

I like his approach...I do things similiar...I can't pull out mixo scale licks in the root position out of my hat too well.I have a hard time with it, but I do know the natural minor scale fairly well and some patterns that fit into it...As a result, what I do if I want to think in A mixo, I would play around with the B minor and just target the A notes, and C#..As a matter of fact, I may just stay in the A- box 5th position and target more C# notes to give it a mixo feel...Same with the E-Dorian which in fact can be the A-Mixo depending on the target notes which it seemed like he was doing...We need all the lil memory tricks we can muster up.
