Default ICBM you're good at amps AND have a Tremoverb...

If my tremoverb is kinda on the verge of oscillating motorboat type sounds (they kinda start for a few seconds at a time) when in solid state rectifier mode but is fine and awesome sounding when on tube rectifier mode, what might be up?

But it works fine in valve rectified mode? Or are you doing a funny?

In solid-state rectifier mode, all the valve voltages are higher, which might mean something.

Try changing V3 and/or V4 (the two furthest from the input jacks in the front row of preamp valves), both of which are cathode-followers that can be affected by high voltages. Do not use Russian-made valves in these positions if you can avoid it, they're prone to failure in this configuration.

If that doesn't do anything, I'll have another think .

Cheers will try swapping them out. I think it's mostly tung sol and a couple of jjs at the mo.

If the Tung-Sols are in V3 or V4 that could be it - Vox don't use them in the middle slot in the AC30CCs for exactly that reason, even though they do in the other two - and it's also why Mesa have switched from Russian to JJ across the board. I personally don't like the sound of JJs much in 'gain' positions, but they do hold up better as cathode-followers. If they aren't already, I'd put the JJs in V3 and V4 and the Tung-Sols in the others.

If you're interested, replacing V5 and V6 - the two in the back row, the reverb drive and phase inverter - with 12AT7s opens up the tone quite a bit and makes the reverb deeper.

No...simply misread your OP as it was noisy in valve rectifier mode...sowwie.

Well, they were indeed in V3 and V4. I changed them out last night and now it works fine in both rectifier modes. Cheers ICBM!

Just out of curiosity, do you notice any difference in tone? I like the Tung-Sols in positions where they don't cause trouble (which is anywhere apart from cathode followers), they sound nice and clear - one of the closest new-production valves to a 'NOS type tone'.

It couldn't really say for sure because I wasn't being very scientific about it! I switched the rectifier setting straight away, then once I'd determined the amp was working fine I switched from EL35s to 6L6s.

I do like the Tung Sols too though - I've got three of them in my slowly shifting mix of preamp tubes. Do you think the ones I took out of the Tremoverb will be ruined now, or are they likely to still be ok once they're put in a less demanding position?
