Probably fine - try them anyway, it's the quickest way to find out if they're still any good.

The problem is caused by leakage from the cathode to the filament, and if it gets to the point it becomes a permanent short the valve will usually fail completely straight away, so if the problem could be stopped by using the valve rectifier mode it sounds like it hadn't got that far.
