Default Calling all PRS Owners/ preowners

    Hi all,

    Been down the PRS road before ( 1993 ce24 and 2009 custom 24 )

I actually enjoyed the ce24 more to be honest but hey, both are now with new owners.

both times I stuck with stock pickups

    However ..... I have a 91 ce24 which I am thinking needs a bit more ..'something'

Id like a slightly more Paf tone from the bridge and a nice neck bucker that I can split.

its got the 5way control and its an Alder body.

    any thoughts recomendations etc

I do have a bridge pafpro sitting looking at me.... but its all black ( im shallow I know but ideally zebra or all cream would be good)

    like this

    thanks

Have you thought about putting a HB sized P90 in the neck position? For me a nice PAF in the bridge paired with a really decent HB sized P90 in the neck is a winning combo....

Hey Casper, yeah that had crossed my mind any known combos that work well with alder/bolt on?

I do like my split neck tone tho!

    thanks for the input

A P90 won't work with the 5-way switch - unless it's a P-Rails. If you want to keep the rotary you have to use a humbucker of some sort with 4-conductor cable. (PRS actually uses 3-conductor, but the red wire is equivalent to the two coil junction wires on 4-conductor pickups.)

If you want double-cream you're limited to Dimarzios, and they don't quite match the colour of the surrounds, if that matters.

I would try a Duncan '59 and Custom 5 personally, but I like Duncans. You could possibly use a pair of P-Rails though, if you can get them in cream (I think you can). You would probably have to arrange it so the P90 coils (not the rails) were on in the '8' position, but that could be done...

Not actually limited to DiMarzio for 'double creams' ... Larry's half baked patent actually doesn't apply this side of the pond ... so If anyone wants them just ask a British maker!

    Great Reply thanks

    well

heres the other thing. Id like to switch to a 3 way and coil splits but can Id like to get a small ( mm axis size) toggle and put it were the sweet switch is and the push pull on the tone for singles?

    is this possible?

I just realy like the look of the sweet switch set up.

    Thanks again

That's good to know. Presumably they didn't take out a worldwide trademark...

Can you use the term PAF as well? (Another thing that Dimarzio should never have been granted a trademark on.)

You can get a mini-switch the same size as the Sweet switch (smaller than the MM switch) - it's a DPDT "progressive throw" on-on-on switch.

Like this, although I'm sure you can get them for much less elsewhere...

As to PAF I assume they just have a US patent ... though how that one was granted god knows. To add to the lunacy they also have a patent on putting a gap between the the magnet and the bases pole pieces ... something that exists by accident in almost all old humbuckers ... and many new ones. However we are not now allowed to point out that this gap is actually beneficial, as it lessens string pull ... as that infringes the Air Norton patent! Likewise they have patented iron 'bodies' between the poles within the coil structure to boost induction ... something that was alluded to in Seth Lover's original patent application and has been common practise for years!

I had a lovely PRS CU22. Amazing player but it was just too 'bling' looking for me in the end (I'm a tatty fender fan at heart). I wasn't mad on the pups (dragon IIs I think) so I put in a Bareknuckle Crawler at the bridge and a catswhisker at the neck (can't recall which one right now!) and I thought that it sounded way better. Sold the guitar but kept the pups!

I toyed with the idea of swooping the dragon iis out of mine but in the end have left them in there. If I want a paf tone I pick up my les Paul and wanted my prs to have a different sound. People complain about them being dark (they are) but a few tweaks of your eq sorts that.

A '91 CE will be Dragon I's won't it? Or is that loaded with Chainsaws I think they were called?
